Engineering Change Management for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

When a product is being developed, every idea to improve that product (whether during manufacturing, service, or repair), needs to be recorded for evaluation. STAEDEAN’s Engineering Change Management for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central facilitates the process of requesting, planning, and implementing changes to products, at any stage during the product lifecycle. The solution has been designed to provide full traceability of the changes from the perspective of Business Central by structuring change-related communication between the ERP and engineering.

With Engineering Change Management, businesses can implement engineering changes in a controlled way—assessing the impact of each change on inventory, purchases, and sales commitments. The solution optimizes collaboration within the Business Central environment, bridging gaps between engineering, operations, and the supply chain efficiently—eventually enabling a smarter product evolution.

What do we solve?

Keep communication consistent and updated across the product engineering lifecycle by ensuring that all stages of a change request—from ideation to approval to implementation—are visible and structured.

Easily evaluate the effect of a product change on inventory, supply chain, and existing orders by allowing users to conduct detailed impact analysis directly within Business Central.

Prioritize multiple Engineering Change Requests (ECR) based on severity and impact by following a workflow-based formal approval procedure before the ECR submission.

Engineering Change Orders (ECO)

ECOs can be generated automatically by STAEDEAN’s Connectivity Studio imports (through Engineering Change Staging) or created manually. ECOs offer versatile support for various change types, such as items, item substitutions, Assembly BOMs, Production BOMs, and routings. This allows for seamless change tracking and implementation of diverse product configurations and processes.

Engineering Change Staging

Importing files from engineering is a two-step process, and requires mapping between the engineering system (PLM, CAD, etc.) and Dynamics 365 Business Central. The file is imported into a staging table from where it can be accepted or rejected—while rejection can return a message to engineering, acceptance means that an ECO is created for review and actual implementation of the change. Import files can also be pre-approved to automatically create the ECO.

Engineering Change Connections

With the help of STAEDEAN’s Business Integration Solutions, connectors can be created to export Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) to Engineering while PLM output can be imported back into Engineering Change Staging, with confirmation being sent back to the PLM system. This not only helps in keeping all engineering systems synchronized but also eliminates data silos between engineering and operations.

Engineering Change Requests (ECR)

Every stakeholder in the organization needs to be able to create an Engineering Change Request at any time and from any location. STAEDEAN’s Engineering Change Management offers businesses the flexibility to add a wizard to any document or document type to easily create ECRs. To document the request notes, stakeholders can attach documents and pictures as well as information on severity, impact, and deadlines.

ECR Wizard

Engineering Change Management offers an intuitive ECR wizard, that can be added to the various source documents like sales orders, purchase orders, service orders, jobs, production orders, and others. The wizard copies the relevant data from the source document before allowing the user to complete the request, thereby streamlining the request creation and review process.

Engineering Change Notification (ECN)

Engineering Change Notifications (ECNs) ensure that stakeholders are kept informed of engineering changes in real time. When the ECO is generated in response to an ECR, the user that submitted the ECR receives a notification when the ECO is processed. Users will be able to see these notifications (in documents such as purchase orders, sales orders, service orders, production orders, assembly orders, or in projects) when a new Revision level of an item has been received.
